Volunteer FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the training and what is covered?

 All Iowa Health Hospice volunteers are required to complete 14 hours of orientation to learn about:

  • Hospice philosophy;
  • Require documentation;
  • Patient confidentiality;
  • Grief;
  • Bereavement;
  • End-of-life spirituality; and
  • Disease management.

Other than direct patient care how else may I be of service as a Hospice volunteer?

Volunteers can assist with office duties, baking, gardening or sewing. They can also help with fundraising and special events.

How much volunteer time will I be obligated to give after training?

There are no set schedules at Iowa Health Hospice regarding volunteer hours. It all depends on the availability of the volunteer. Volunteer opportunities are flexible enough to accommodate most schedules. You decide on the hours you are willing and able to give.

Do I ever have to take care of a client's physical needs?

We want our volunteers to be relaxed and confident with patient interaction. Our volunteers are encouraged to communicate to staff what they are willing to do, or not to do when it comes to patient care.

As a new volunteer what kind of support will be available to me?

Volunteers Coordinators are responsible for training, supervising, supporting and scheduling the volunteers. The hospice staff is also available for additional support. There are also volunteer support group meetings, educational offerings and additional individualized trainings.

What type of environment will I be working in?

Hospice attends to clients in private home settings, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and our hospice house (Taylor House). We attend to our clients wherever they live. If you are providing support other than patient care, you will work out of our Iowa Health Home Care office or your own home.
